There are two pairs of genes that determine the basic coat colours in dogs such as Poodles, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and Doodles.  These are: B/b and E/e.    Shades of those basic colours are modified by other genes referred to as:  V/v and R/r  which lighten or darken the basic colours.
