Behavior Tip of the Month
We have a neutered male cat who tries to mate with anything wool. He destroys our blankets, sweaters, etc. How can we stop this annoying habit?
It sounds like your cat is sexually "imprinted" with wool. Here are some approaches you can try to cool his wool ardor.
1) Start by making the wool items aversive to him. Cats hate the smell of citrus. Try tumble-drying the items in lemon-scented dryer sheets.
2) Try booby-trapping the items. Leave one out and attach a thread to it with a safety pin. Attach the other end of the thread to an empty plastic milk container. Then put 15 pennies inside it. Put the closed container on top of something high (like a TV tray) and the wool item below. When your cat grabs the item, the plastic container will fall down and startle him. He won't be hurt but the experience should prove a deterrent. Do this with various wool items at different times.
Some cats suck wool. Just in case that is part of what is going on, try feeding your cat a prescription high fiber weight reducing dry kibble. Keep the bowl full at all times. If you still have the problem after trying the above, there is medication that might help.
